Cardinals get early start to season

High school football officials need a fall camp too, and E.D. White Catholic is willing to help.

With fall scrimmages filling the high school football docket next week, the Cardinals aren’t waiting until then to face an opponent.

E.D. White will participate in what is being called a jamboree for officials on Friday at East Jefferson’s Joe Yenni Stadium. The Cardinals will play Riverdale starting at 6:30 p.m.

While the participating teams get an extra scrimmage, the jamboree is to help officials prepare for the upcoming season. The Cardinals are scheduled to face H.L. Bourgeois on the Braves practice field in Gray on Aug. 16,

E.D. White coach Kyle Lasseigne said he sees the jamboree as an opportunity to get on field and help his team get better.

“The head of officials called and he needed teams from this area to participate in what is called officials training. They are calling it a jamboree,” Lasseigne said. “If you agree to play in it, you get to put the pads on earlier than anyone else, and it is a chance to get on the field.”

The jamboree will consists of two halves with 20 minute running time.

Lasseigne said four teams from the area were invited, but only E.D. White and Patterson accepted the invitation.

Lasseigne said with officials from the Thibodaux Association working the jamboree, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association asked teams from the association’s area to participate.

While he understands this scrimmage is more for the officials, Lasseigne see benefits in getting the extra work.

“I thought it is a good opportunity for our kids, especially since we are so young in some spots. It also is competition against a team that we will not play this year. I thought it could only help us,” Lasseigne said. “I don’t know if our officials have been involved with this before. They wanted teams from this association area. It is a chance to jump-start the season and I didn’t see anything wrong with (playing in this jamboree).
